Happy 234th Birthday Marines!
Nov 10, 2009
Louisiana Marines gathered at Southside Cafe in Slidell today for a birthday lunch.
The beer was cold and the food was great. A good time was had by all who attended.
The birthday lunch began at 11:00 and by 12:00 the luncheon turned into the expected
"war stories" session. The stories varied from gut busting funny to incredibly informative.
Col. Ingraham provided us with some outstanding historical facts about Louisiana's role in the
Gulf War and of local Marines that performed great acts of heroism. The rest of us resorted
to our endless supply of crazy things that we witnessed in the Corps. The luncheon was
supposed to end at 1:00pm but, time flies when you are having fun and
we ended up staying until 2:00.
Southside was a great venue. Every wall in the place is covered with history.
From helicopter tail rotors to the Japanese flag that flew over the Japanese Headquarters at Iwo Jima. If
you are a Marine and haven't been to Southside, it is a must see.
If you missed the birthday lunch, you missed a great time. Be sure to sign the guestbook on this site
and be a part of the next luncheon. We will not wait until the next birthday lunch to get
together again. So join the site and get together with your fellow Marines.

Fellow Louisiana Marine, Leighton Becker is a police officer with the Bossier Parish
Sheriff's Department and is a Drill Instructor with the Bossier Young Marines Program.
Two days after the last class graduated, Becker developed a fever and he thought that
it was a viral infection. He went to see a doctor and, after a number of test, it was
determined that he has brain cancer. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy.
There is a website set up for him at www.caringbridge.com.
I am sure that this Marine would love to receive some words of encouragement. Please
take a few minutes to visit the website and post a reply to the guestbook. Keep Leighton,
his wife and 9 month old daughter in your thoughts and prayers.
Becker served in the Marine Corps from 2001 until 2006.
